Q.What is PET / PET-CT normalisation and why does it need a Ge-68 line source?
A PET scanner has thousands of detector crystals arranged in rings. Every crystal has a slightly different efficiency, and each line-of-response (crystal pair) has to be corrected for that individual sensitivity before the image is reconstructed — otherwise the reconstructed activity map is wrong. Normalisation is the calibration procedure that measures each line-of-response sensitivity. It needs a source with known geometry and long half-life that fills the scanner FOV — a Ge-68 cylindrical line source is the standard.
Q.Why Ge-68 and not F-18 for the normalisation source?
F-18 has a 110-minute half-life — an F-18 source would decay to unusable activity mid-scan, and every normalisation would need a freshly-produced source. Ge-68 has a 271-day half-life and decays through Ga-68 (which emits the same 511 keV annihilation photons as F-18 clinical tracers), so the calibration reads as directly applicable to the clinical PET signal. The same source lasts across the scanner's multi-year calibration cycle.
Q.What does the double-layer stainless-steel + argon-welded construction solve?
The source has to sit inside the scanner FOV for extended normalisation acquisitions, sometimes repeatedly across the calibration cycle. A single-walled source with pressure-fitted ends is a leak risk — Ga-68 gas escape from an aged source contaminates the scanner and forces an unscheduled service. Double-layer stainless steel with argon-welded sealed ends is the reference construction for a sealed radioactive line source rated for the ~10 year working life the Ga-68 activity remains useful.
Q.What ±5 % uniformity means for the normalisation quality
A normalisation measurement can only be as uniform as the source. ±5 % uniformity across the line source means the correction factors developed from the normalisation are accurate to ±5 % — well within the AAPM TG-126 acceptance range for PET normalisation. A poorly-uniform line source degrades the normalisation and shows up as ring artefacts on clinical PET images.
