I-131 thyroid-iodine routine dispensing
Stepped-up shielding tier — I-131 capsule preparation for diagnostic uptake / scan and post-thyroidectomy ablation prep at lower activities. The 364 keV gamma needs a heavier wall than Tc-99m.
I-131 high-activity ablation / therapy
Boosted shielding tier — I-131 ablation dispensing for thyroid-cancer post-thyroidectomy ablation. Higher cumulative activity per shift means the shielding tier steps up; the wall handles the cumulative dose-rate without exceeding AERB occupational limits.
β-γ hybrid dispensing (Y-90, P-32, Sr-89)
Pb + Perspex hybrid build — for pure-beta and mixed-emission therapy isotopes. Y-90 microspheres for SIR-T liver, P-32 for myeloproliferative disorders, Sr-89 for bone metastasis palliation. Perspex inner stops the beta, lead handles the gamma + bremsstrahlung.
Ga-67 / In-111 mid-energy SPECT

I-131 emits at 364 keV — substantially harder than Tc-99m. The lead-shielding tier steps up for routine thyroid-iodine dispensing, and steps up again for high-activity ablation — picked per the AERB / ICRP annual occupational-dose framework.
Pure-beta isotopes (Y-90, P-32, Sr-89) need a low-Z absorber (Perspex / PMMA) on the inner surface — high-Z lead generates bremsstrahlung against the beta. The hybrid build is the right answer for the SIR-T microsphere line and the bone-pain palliation programme.

Q.Why does routine SPECT dispensing need a dedicated L-bench?
SPECT Tc-99m dispensing runs 20–40 patients across a morning list — every dose sits on the bench for 30–60 seconds while the technologist draws, verifies activity and caps. Without shielding around the dispensing station the technologist accumulates torso dose across every one of those doses. An L-bench provides an L-shaped lead wall — the technologist stands behind the vertical leg, the horizontal leg holds the dispensing station, and the torso stays in shadow through the shift.
Q.Why is the SPECT L-bench lead thickness lighter than the PET L-bench?
SPECT Tc-99m emits 140 keV — one lead half-value layer is ~0.3 mm. A ~3 mm lead wall attenuates 140 keV by more than 99.95 %; heavier shielding buys negligible additional attenuation and costs ergonomics and floor loading. The SPECT L-bench lead tier is engineered against the actual 140 keV photon energy — light enough to keep the bench manoeuvrable, heavy enough for the >99.95 % attenuation the workflow needs.
Q.What is the β-γ hybrid variant for?
I-131 emits both beta particles and gamma photons. Beta shielding wants a low-Z material (Perspex / PMMA) on the inside — using lead alone produces bremsstrahlung (secondary X-rays) as the beta particles decelerate in the lead, which then irradiates the technologist. The β-γ hybrid L-bench uses a Perspex inner liner inside the lead outer wall — beta stops in the Perspex without bremsstrahlung production, gamma is attenuated by the lead. The correct architecture for I-131 therapy dispensing.
Q.Which chassis tier fits which department layout?
Ultra compact 13×13×17″ for small satellite hot labs where bench space is a binding constraint. Mid-size 17×18×24″ is the workhorse for typical Indian SPECT departments. Standard SPECT tabletop 18×17×26″ for higher-throughput dispensing lines. Same lead-shielding mass inside any chassis outer (MS / SS 202 / SS 304); pick the chassis against the hot-lab worktop layout.
