Q.Why does PET dispensing need a dedicated L-bench rather than a general dispensing table?
PET tracers (F-18, Ga-68, Lu-177) emit 511 keV annihilation photons at every step of the dispensing workflow. An unshielded general table gives the radiopharmacist no shielding between the source and their torso during the 30–60 seconds each patient dose spends on the bench. An L-bench provides an L-shaped lead wall around the working area — the technologist stands behind the vertical leg of the L while the horizontal leg holds the dispensing station, so the torso stays in shadow through the working shift.
Q.Why is the lead thickness on a PET L-bench heavier than on a SPECT L-bench?
511 keV photons need much more lead to attenuate than 140 keV Tc-99m photons — the linear attenuation coefficient drops sharply at high energy. A shield thickness that gives >99.95 % attenuation at 140 keV gives only single-digit percent attenuation at 511 keV. The PET L-bench is engineered against the 511 keV photon energy — the lead-thickness tier is what makes it a PET bench rather than a SPECT bench.
Q.What does the lead-glass viewing window solve at the dispensing bench?
The technologist has to see the vial, syringe barrel and dose-calibrator display while dispensing — the shielding cannot be opaque. A lead-glass window in the vertical leg of the L is lead-equivalent to the surrounding shielding but optically transparent, so the technologist reads the calibration scale and verifies the volume without stepping out from behind the shield.
Q.When does the department add the 50 mm side-shielding pack or the base-lead option?
The side-shielding pack extends the L-wall shielding to protect an adjacent workstation from scatter — needed when a second technologist sits at a bench across from the L-bench. The base-lead option adds lead under the worktop slab to cover the floor-side scatter path — needed when the L-bench sits above an occupied floor (basement patient area, staff room below). Both are configured per-site against the department layout at order.
